Особливості функціонування голосних звуківпівнічного сходу Англії впродовж 1990-2000 років

У статті наведено результати експериментального дослідження особливостей актуалізації носіями північно східного діалекту Англії відхилень у системі голосних звуків , зафіксов аних у пер іод 1990 2000 років. З огляду на сучасні тенд енції до включення діале кт у до поля інтересів не лише географічної діалектології, а й соціолінгвістики та з метою детального вивчення особливостей функціонування будь якого діалекту та північно східног о діалекту англійської мови , зокрема, було вирішено дос ліджувати актуалізацію йог о одиниць вокалічної системи , які відрізняються від орфоепічної норми в мовленні носіїв різних соціокультурних рівнів та статі, які проживають на території певного регіону та у визначений період 1990 2000 років. Обраний проміжок часу визнається критичним д ля розвитку діалекту, позаяк устрій англійського суспільства зазнав значних змін в кінці ХХ го століття. В становлено номенклатуру сегментного складу вокалічної системи північн о східного діалекту шляхом проведення аудитивного і по рівняльного аналізів відхилень фонетичних одиниць сегментного рівня від орфоепічної норми англійської мови. Систематизовано такі типові відхилення в актуалізації голосних від вимовного стандарту; якісна редукція фонеми; заміна фонеми; відтягнення язика назад під час вимовифонеми; неправильна реалізація положення язика під час артикуляції фон ем; заміна ядра дифтонга; звуженн я ядра дифтонга; опущення глайду дифтонга; заміна дифтонга; опущення ядра дифтонга; заміна дифтонга; заміна ядра дифтонга; повна редукція голосних звуків у ненаголоше них складах. Наведено графічну інтерпретацію кількісної залежності реалізацій конкретних видів відхилень у системі голосних звуків від соціокультурного рівня (високий, середній та та статі носіїв досліджуваного діалекту (мовці жіночої та чоловічої статі у віці від 16 до 80 р оків)оків). Встановле ні кількі сні показ ники чітко демонструють вплив суспільних змін північного сходу Англії у період 19990 2000 років на тенденцію щодо зміщення традиційного унормування мовлення здебільшого носіями діалекту високого та середнього соціокультурного рівнів

Socrative as a Formative Assessment Tool in English for Specific Purposes Course

Many factors influence the development of the educational system, and today it is a global COVID-19 pandemic. Stakeholders in the educational process need to adjust to a new distant reality without compromising the quality. The formative assessment proved to be a suitable approach to overcome existing challenges, and one of the most popular tools to facilitate it is Socrative. The study aims to 1) investigate student attitudes and the correlation between academic achievements in ESP and majors and 2) present our experience in utilizing Socrative for formative assessment in a distant mode in the settings of the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.” To achieve the goals of our study, we have developed and validated a questionnaire, collected quantitative data, analyzed and interpreted the qualitative data; the study sample included 137 students. The obtained results have shown the general positive student attitude towards the usage of Socrative within the course of ESP due to its efficacy, personalization, and responsiveness. The results can be a perspective for further investigation despite some limitations

Teaching Spoken Production in Global Contexts 2021

Shaping and developing communication skills in non-linguistic faculties in higher education institutions remain relevant. Thus, the theoretical and methodological guidelines for training English professionally-oriented spoken production are among significant problems. Intending to overcome some related challenges, we conducted this study to investigate the efficiency of using presentational speeches based on authentic video materials. The main aim of the research was to analyze the problem from methodological and didactic perspectives and substantiate the theoretical and methodological principles of the professional training of monolingual students through the experimental verification of the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. To achieve the objectives of this study, in the first stage, we determined the efficiency of pedagogical conditions for developing the foreign language competence of students. Then we verified the efficiency of using presentational speeches in teaching Spoken Production. At the last stage, we analyzed the effectiveness of the proposed methods of forming and developing foreign language competence (Spoken Production) by using presentational speeches. The study sample included 45 students of the Sociology and Law Faculty in the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. We obtained the results that confirmed the efficiency of the presentational speech approach in teaching spoken production. Our study revealed that the presentational speech approach facilitates enhancement in the level of students' professional competence. These findings provide a good starting point for discussion and further research

Developing reading skills in a flipped class: an algorithm

Developing reading skills is one of the main goals in the university ESP class since nowadays students have to process substantial amounts of information in academic settings and throughout their future career. The current shift in high education paradigm challenges teachers to refocus their teaching strategies and adopt new approaches to make the learning process rewarding in the modern context. Flipped class approach is claimed to have a great potential to provide a refreshing view for the ESP teaching and bring the learning process the new level of efficiency. Therefore, the approach is getting more and more attention from practitioners and researchers. Recent researches report a generally positive impact of the model on students learning outcomes, attitudes and level of satisfaction compared to the traditional models. However, developing reading skills and utilizing text-based activities are not very common in a flipped class model since it is highly associated with video. The lack of clarity about feasibility of this mode for developing reading skills and low technical expertise are among the most common reasons why teachers are hesitant to adopt flipped class model in their practice. The current paper presents the implementation algorithm of flipped reading for an ESP course. In addition, the possible option addressing the lack of technical expertise is described. As a technical solution, the platform Wizer.me is presented in the current paper. The platform offers free tools for designing interactive reading worksheets and provides special features such as adding audio content, video, links and images to the worksheets. The service enables teachers to gain insights on the students’ progress and status and offer a feedback. Special features offered by the platform allow approaching each student individually and give good opportunities for students’ self-analysis as a crucial component of developing the skills of reflection and critical evaluation. Having user-friendly interface, the Wizer.me platform is available to use by the teachers with the basic level of computer literacy

Hypertext Technology as a Tool of Organizing the Learning Process in Higher Educational Establishments

У статті обґрунтовується актуальність проблеми організації навчального процесу у вищих начальних закладах з використанням інформаційних технологій, зокрема технології гіпертексту. На основі теоретичного аналізу актуальних досліджень уточнюються ключове поняття «гіпертекст». Детально розглядається його структура та зміст. Представлено узагальнений перелік переваг застосування гіпертекстової технології в навчальному процесі. На основі практичного досвіду наводяться приклади застосування в реальному навчальному процесі й отримані кількісні показники результатів упровадження.This paper is devoted to the analysis of the hypertext technology implementation in learning and teaching process of higher educational establishments in terms of current and perspective changes in higher education system. New challenges of modern professional society make the necessity of developing new approaches to teaching foreign language which are extremely urgent. To reach the modern goals in professional foreign language training it is very important to develop new pedagogical methods focused on personal approach and based on modern requirements. Having analyzed current researches on the different aspects of the problem, we can conclude that the majority of researchers consider implementation of information technology as a promising way. Among the wide variety of different options, the scientists outline the hypertext technology as an effective tool for increasing efficiency of the learning process and a productive tool for developing important for future specialist’s skills. On the basis of theoretical analysis, the author defines the key term - hypertext. The structure and meaning of the notion are outlined in details. The main components of hypertext are explained in the article. After detailed examination of the papers devoted to the topic, the main advantages of presenting material to the students in comparison with traditional ways are listed here. All the pros are divided into two types: technical and pedagogical. The author provides some examples of applying the hypertext technology for structuring the material in the process of teaching professionally oriented English for the students of the applied mathematics faculty of the NTUU «KPI». As the result of theoretical workout of theme researches, the author presents the algorithm for creating material layout based on the hypertext technology. Based on personal experience, the example of practical implementation in real conditions is presented in the article. The results of this practical experience are illustrated in numbers obtained from survey and testing. Based on the theoretical analysis and practical experience, the author concludes that the hypertext technology, among the other forms of information technology, is an effective and promising tool for improving the organization of learning and teaching process. Being not only an effective tool but also a new facility for intelligent activity, the hypertext technology motivates students and teachers for further personal and professional development
